Greens argue for Futurist Theatre

11 January 2017

Both of Scarborough's Green Councillors tried to save the Futurist Theatre from imminent demolition when a debate took place in Council on 9th January 2017.

Dilys Cluer argued that it would be unwise to approve funding for demolition at this time. She said that both sides had produced additional documents at the last minute and there had not been time for full assessment. She also argued that the Save the Futurist group had recently acquired new energy and expertise and they should be given a chance to come up with a sustainable solution.

Mark Vesey argued for the retention of the town's heritage,  saying that people come here for beautiful buildings. He said,

"I believe this council has a duty to current and future generations to preserve the things that make Scarborough so special, that make it the 1st seaside resort in the country and to preserve its title of queen of watering places."

Both councillors also argued that demolition would be more detrimental to the environment in terms of increased emissions of CO2 and reference was made to the Council's Sustainability Policy.

After nearly two hours of debate the motion to allocate funding was carried 22-21. The Green Party will be watching to see how they can influence what happens next.
